In Taylor Coleridge’s poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, an albatross following a ship at sea is considered an omen of good luck. Unfortunately, the sailor Samuel shoots the albatross, an act which is regarded as a curse, and his fellow sailors make him wear the dead albatross around his neck.
